General advice

RHS Advice pages by the Royal Horticultural Society are a fantastic resource. They include expert advice about growing, eco-friendly gardening, encouraging wildlife, step-by-step guides and more. Remember that RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate has a library in its Bramhall Learning Centre available to RHS members.

The National Allotment Society is the leading representative body for UK allotment holders with over 125,000 members. Its blog contains lots of useful articles. Membership of the NAS is £25 annually (plus £1 in the first year) and gives access to a members-only area with still more useful resources. Members benefit from free allotmenteer’s liability insurance.

Garden Guide gives personalised planting information, based on where you are. It is a US site, but will accept “Harrogate UK” as a valid location. You need to create a subscription-free account to make full use of the site.

Dobies sells organic flower seeds, vegetable seeds, and organic fruit seeds and plants. It also has a very useful Hints and Tips blog for gardeners and allotmenteers.

The Natural Gardener The Natural Gardener provides eco-friendly, sustainable and organic gardening products. These include compost, coir pots, soil enhancers, weed and pest control products, and wood treatments.

Planning your plot

Allotment Online is a site run by a husband and wife digging duo who have rented an allotment plot since 2016, and who say they are not experts. However, their site is a wealth of fascinating and useful information for allotmenteers.

Materials

Temu has a huge range of relatively inexpensive materials for gardeners and allotmenteers, including weed suppressing membrane, soakaway membrane, bark chippings and more. Some believe it has a bit of a reputation for some lower-quality products and for badgering with offers. However, read descriptions carefully and you will be okay. It now has UK-based warehouses, and delivery is usually very quick from those.

Get Composting sells products such as water butts, compost bins and composting accessories. North Yorkshire Council has offers there for a limited number of residents, on a first come first served basis.
